Hey y'all!
Last year I published two blog posts listing magazines that were open for submission at the time. This year, I'm compiling most of those two lists, and adding at least one new magazine to the list. If you've been itching to try your hand at submitting content to children's magazines, this list is for you.
Wondering what you should send? Read the magazine's submission guidelines, and decide if you like what you see. Often there will be recommendations for what the magazine is seeking. This information will usually be surrounded by information such as ideal article length, what rights the magazine would take to your piece were they to accept it, etc. Make sure to read all of this. It's important to know and understand what you could be "getting into." Have fun!
Description: Young Rider is a horse-themed magazine for teens ages 8-15, mainly girls. They prefer that you read a copy of their magazine before sending them any of your work. This is a common thing. Many magazines request that you read some of their content before submitting (to help you get a taste of their style).
Sample Issue: I haven't found a full sample issue, but they do have Mini Digital Issues that you can access after giving them your email address.
Newsletter/Email List: Yes. Scroll down to the bottom of their site, the subscribe form is on the right.
I include info on newsletter/email lists for each magazine in this post because if you subscribe and read what they send you, it's another possible method for getting an idea on what kind of writing they're looking for.
Rights: As of 2024, this is what they asked for: "1st North American rights, after 1 year can be re-published elsewhere."
I emailed Young Rider to acquire this information sometime in 2024. It's likely still the same, but do your own investigation to be sure. Email Young Rider and ask! If you are not sure what kind of rights a magazine requests, go ahead and ask them! Many will answer you, although it can take a while to get a response.
Pay: While pay is not specifically stated, I am fairly certain that they do indeed pay their writers, and fairly well. Doing a quick Google search may help you.
Writer Guidelines: The submission guidelines are actually found on the website for Horse Illustrated magazine, another magazine in the same family as Young Rider. You can find links to submission guidelines for both magazines here.
Description: AQUILA is "A trail-blazing, independent children’s magazine for curious readers of 8 - 14 years." Each issue is themed (Previous themes include Viking, The Brain, The Ocean, and many others), and if I am recalling this correctly, you can get their list of upcoming themes if you email and ask for it.
Sample Issue: One can be found here.
Newsletter/Email List: Yes. Go to their Home page, and scroll down until you find the form.
Rights: Again, I contacted the magazine itself, and I am told that rights are negotiated on a case-by-case basis.
Pay: £105 per short story or feature, paid upon publication. As of the time of writing, Google tells me that £105 is $194.85 CAD, and $142.37 USD. Double-check that yourself, however.
Writer Guidelines: The submission guidelines can be found here.
Description: Fun For Kidz is a monthly magazine for kids aged 6-12 years. "Fun For Kidz publishes articles and activities that deal with timeless topics, such as pets, nature, hobbies, science, games, sports, careers, and anything else likely to interest a child."
Sample Issue: Cannot find one. It would seem you must purchase your own.
Newsletter/Email List: Yes. Go to their site. The subscriber form is at the bottom of the page.
Rights: "Fun For Kidz buys first American serial rights and pays upon publication. It welcomes the contributions of both published and unpublished writers. We reserve the right to publish all material from the magazine on our website as a sample of the magazine. This is for display only on a limited time basis. Contributors will be compensated whenever their work is published to generate revenue and not strictly for exposure."
Pay: What I found says that it is a five cent minimum per word, they'll pay more for work accompanied by art or photographs. They will pay at least $10 for a poem or puzzle. Fun For Kidz will also send you a complimentary issue if they accept your work. But it is only complimentary for those of you who live in the US. For the rest of us, the cost of shipping is deducted from our total pay.
Writer Guidelines: The submission guidelines can be found here. Additional information for writers can be found here. Do check out the second page. It tells you which issues they are currently seeking submissions for.
Description: Nature Friend is a Christian magazine for kids and teens, but they also want their magazine to be something that the whole family can enjoy. The quality is excellent. I will say I am slightly biased, as they have published one of my stories, but if you compare their sample issues to samples of many other children's magazines, I think you will find that NF far surpasses them.
Sample Issue: Nature Friend goes above and beyond in this area. You can find FIVE different issues by following this link, which can also be found under the Magazine tab at the top of their website, or in the website footer. There's also a link to their sample issues included in the submission guidelines.
Newsletter/Email List: I don't believe that they have one.
Rights & Pay: Here is what they request: "Full rights, .10 per edited word; 1st rights, with right to reprint in our publications, .08 per edited word; 2nd rights, with right to reprint in our publications, .05 per edited word."
Writer Guidelines: The writer guidelines can be found here. Yes, they are quite lengthy, but read them. They have a lot of things to teach you. Additional NF tips can be found here.
Description: I grabbed this description off of Kazoo's website: "Kazoo is an award-winning, ad-free, indie magazine for girls, 5 to 12, that celebrates them for being strong, smart, fierce and true to themselves."
Sample Issue: None found.
Newsletter/Email List: Not that I can find. You can follow them on social media if you are so inclined. I'm not. :)
Rights: Unknown. They may possibly be available upon request.
Pay: Unknown. It may possibly be available upon request.
Writer Guidelines: Not found. Again, it is possible that they have a set that you could get your hands on if you contact them. I'd be cautious of submitting until I knew a bit more.

Description: The Brio page is directed towards its audience: teen girls seeking to follow Christ. Here's something that might give you more of an idea of what they are about.

Growing into womanhood is a great adventure and the Brio team wants to journey with you. Let’s talk culture, body image, social media, boys and more — all grounded in our shared faith in Jesus Christ."

Newsletter/Email List: Not that I know of.
Rights: Unknown.
Pay: Unknown.
I couldn't find specific information on rights and pay for Brio, but I've found such information for Clubhouse and Clubhouse Jr., magazines that are published by the Focus on the Family, just like Brio is.
Writer Guidelines: Can't find anything up-to-date. Find an email address and ask for them, if you wish. Current calls for submission can be found on this page, along with several other calls for submission from Focus on the Family.
