The Goose Girl: Free Verse

Updated: Mar 18

white geese on green riverbank

honk! honk!

rain or shine the goose girl

releases her feathered friends from their pen

and herds them to the lush green pasture,

using a long pole to gently guide them

down the crowded, busy street and

out into the countryside.

barefoot, the girl skips along calling

hey goosey-goosey, hey goosey!

she is in the pastureland now

the grass weaving between her toes

so thick, so cushy, so green--

--so yummy. geese are grazers, you know.

the goose girl sighs.

a happy sigh, you know.

a life-is-good sigh,

a contented sigh,

a delighted sigh,

a grass-between-your-toes sigh

and a sunshine-in-my-face kind of sigh,

you know?

honk! honk!

the geese want to move on now, you know.

the grass is green, the grass is yummy--

--but the geese are thirsty now.

the goose girl follows her geese

down the slope to the river.

clear water, muddy banks.

perfect mud, you know.

oozy mud,

slippery mud,

perfect-for-curious-beaks mud,

worms-in-the-dirt mud,

white-feather-staining mud,

lovely mud, you know.

honk! honk!

the geese are ready to dive in.

splash, splash.

fifteen dirty, mud coated geese

are washed clean.

the water isn't clear anymore.

honk! honk!

this is where you will find the goose girl

rain or shine here she will be.

this is where you will find the geese,

rain or shine, here they will be.

girl, geese, mud, water, grass, contentment.

It's all here, you know.

honk! honk!
